JANUARY

SARC members had a very busy year in 1996 and made plans for several activities during 1997.  The South Alabama Radio Club received approval from ARRL for Club membership at the January ARRL meeting in New Mexico.   Another milestone this year resulted in securing the Dixon Room of Andalusia Public library for use the third Thursday of each month for the year 1997.  Meeting times remain 7:00 PM Central time.   Come join us!   The second week of January, John  (KE4HIE) and Larry (KF4GRA) attended an advanced SKYWARN spotter training class in Hoover, Alabama presented by Mr. Brian Peters from the NOAA Weather office in Alabaster.

FEBRUARY

John Brown (KE4HIE) and Larry DeFilippi ( KF4GRA) attended the Alabama Section meeting in Clanton February 1, 1997.   At the February SARC meeting, Mr. Gary Beeler, from the Mobile office of the National Weather Service, conducted a Skywarn Spotter training class for club members and interested people from the local community.   Mr. Ryan Bridges (KD4AMK) presented a few comments about reporting to the SKYWARN net following the meeting.

APRIL

Several SARC members attended the April club meeting of the Brewton Amateur Radio Union in Century, Florida to discuss plans for Field Day.  This year the two clubs ( SARC and BARU) will hold a joint Field Day in Andalusia.

MAY

The May 3rd Hamfest was the biggest undertaking this year.  Plans had to change due to various reasons.   Members were saddened to hear about the death of Gil Jones (WL7EC) on Easter Sunday.   He will be missed.   Please remember his family in your prayers.

JUNE

Field Day activities were a great success this year.   Members from the Brewton Amateur Radio Union joined the South Alabama Radio Club members on the campus of Lurleen B. Wallace College, the site for this years joint Field day activities with the two clubs.   Contacts were made to 6 foreign countries and 44 states.   Every one had a great time as the weather was sunny but overcast Saturday and Sunday.   Around 5:00 PM club members took a break to enjoyed a cook out.  Jerry, KA4IHE, did an excellent job grilling the spare ribs.   Plans are to hold the activities in Andalusia this year and alternate with Brewton next year.

JULY

In July, Hurricane Danny was expected to bring heavy rains to the covington County area.  Lee Joyner, KD4UKU and John Brown KE4HIE, manned the EMA office keeping contact with the National Weather Service in Mobile along with the National Hurricane center.    They provided the area SKYWARN spotters up to date weather related bulletins during the threat of heavy rains.   Fortunately, the heavy rain did not occur, but this gave SKYWARN members a real weather scenario to work.    Thanks for your time and effort Lee and John!

AUGUST

In June and again in August members of the South Alabama Radio Club participated in a FOXHUNT hosted by the Brewton Amateur radio Union.  The fox, Harold Baggett, KE4YWK, was able to elude the hunters the first hunt, due to a problem encountered with a fuel line in one of the hunter's vehicle.   However, Jeff, NT4Y and Karen KQ4QE, were able to find the fox, Harold, at the August FOXHUNT, in 35 minutes.   Congratulations Jeff and Karen!  Everyone had a great time and look forward to the next foxhunt!

¹KF4CTA is the old call sign.  Lehn took advantage of the vanity call sign from the FCC and now has the vanity call sign N4GLL.
